One of the reasons I chose to make the pikal knife design is because of its practicality in nature. All you need to do is pull it out and hold it in the reverse grip, as this is the main way it is intended to be held. The pummeling motion used with the pikal knife is very instinctual, especially when considering that this knife is going to be used to defend oneself. In that moment, you may possibly freeze up. In that case, you are not necessarily going to be thinking about all the techniques involved in defending yourself, so you would want something simple in design.
